Welcome to the South Easy
Funny how the two most topical songs to have caught my ear in the last week are both older tunes leaked in response to the wave of revulsion following the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, first “I Can’t Breathe” by Swiss and now this. If Quelle Chris had instead recorded and released a new song this week it’s hard to see how it could be any more relevant or half as powerful. It’s the universality that guts me here, not in a bullshit condescending ‘all lives matter‘ way but in how he connects “shooting down my people” to the everyday violence of religious persecution and sexist pay deals. This is an unfinished version, he’s left the closing stretch blank for a final verse, it’s going to be a tough spot to fill but as he says in his written introduction to the track on Bandcamp, “THIS IS NOT A CONTEST. This is about creating dialogue.”
