Last month Phoenix Da Ice Fire released a new mix CD in partnership with longtime associate Black Chronical. It’s called Silver Casket, if you missed it might have been cos he’s going by the name Solar Black this time out. I haven’t had a chance to listen yet but got fresh motivation from a few runs through his new track in partnership with Silas Zephania ‘Double Barrel‘. It’s nothing to do with Silver Casket or any other album project as far as I can tell, but it is nevertheless a formidable showcase for his skills. My personal favourite line is ‘street debonair clocking my flair with the tabernacle‘, but then I always was a sucker for Hebrew Bible references. Silas Zephania’s verse is more difficult to follow, I had to rewind a couple of times to catch what he’s saying and even then the precise meaning isn’t always obvious. I’ve been stuck on ‘these bars are avatars that discard the mirage of subliminal torture‘ for the last five minutes. I think he’s saying his raps will stop you having nightmares, but I wouldn’t swear to that.
