Everyone my age that grew up on films like Commando, Universal Soldier, Best of the Best, Rambo and the like must be sweltering in anticipation for the forthcoming cinema release of The Expendables. With an incredible cast list including *deep breath* Sly Stallone, Arnie, Bruce Willis, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture and… er… Jason Statham (I’ve got not problem with Statham actually – the closest thing the UK’s ever had to a bona fide action star), its odds on that this film won’t be up for many awards. In fact, it’s probably a good bet that the film will be a steaming pile of canine excrement – but that isn’t gonna stop me from catching this as soon as it drops.
The only action stars missing from this flick that could have improved the cast list are probably Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal. Van Damme allegedly turned down a part as he thought there wasn’t enough room for character development – think that the arty JCVD must have clouded his judgement a little bit, and Seagal looks to be popping up in Robert Rodriguez’s Machete, so can’t get too down.
This trailer has been floating around for a little bit, but I thought I’d up it on here for anyone that hasn’t caught it yet. Its gonna be big.
