I think most rappers are jealous of people who can sing. If we could sing, it’d make writing those catchy hooks just that little bit easier. Of course, you could be one of those guys who doesn’t give a fuck and sings anyway, like ODB, or the Biz. One man who can sing, however, is Mayer Hawthorne. Don’t know if he can rap though, but thats beside the point.
Anyway, he’s just released this sweet EP of cover versions, and its well worth checking out. There’s a dope, spooked out version of Chromeo’s Don’t Turn The Lights On, and a great re-doing of the Isley Brothers Work To Do. And some more.

In The Crates:
• Mayer Hawthorne – I Need You (Produced by Nottz)”
• Mayer Hawthorne – Your Easy Lovin’ Ain’t Pleasin’ Nothin’ [VIDEO]

New track by Mayer Hawthorne, produced by Nottz. A cover of a 1969 Otis Leville track apparently.

I met Nottz at Nightlife’s Dilla Tribute in L.A. and we just kept in contact. I had always been a fan of Nottz since the 90s. He sent me a bunch of beats and at first I had no idea what to do with any of them, but eventually it hit me… When Nottz sent me that batch – that particular beat stood out. It had the same chord progression as the Otis Leville, so I just went with it.

New video for the track of Mayer’s A Strange Arrangement LP. Still loving this album.
