NLT Productions ft/ FLOetic Lara [@LeeN_NLT @FLOeticLara]

April 20, 2012

Something a little bit laid back and outside my usual style for this relatively blue skied morning. I’m gonna go make a cup of coffee and sit outside on the fire escape for a little piece of the AM. Produced by LeeN and featuring the vocal harmonising of FLOetic Lara (who as far as I can tell isn’t part of early 2000′s soul’ists Floetic) This is a free download again though, so you’ve got no excuse for missing out.

Frank Ocean (@Frank_Ocean) – Swim Good

September 20, 2011

The video has dropped for what was possibly my favourite track off of Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia/Ultra album that came out a good while back. The guy has managed to pick up quite a sizeable buzz, whether it was through his links with the OFWGKTA lot (is their buzz fading by the way? Haven’t heard much from them for a while) or his guest appearances on the new Jay-Z/Kanye project.

Anyway, its a dope video to a dope track. And there’s another one for you below – the video to Thinking About You. Its gonna be interesting to see what direction Ocean goes with his new stuff as he seems to have his pick of options right now.

Aabaraki ft/ Soulkhan – Karate [VIDEO]

June 10, 2011

You may have heard Akie Bermiss’ voice if you’ve previously listened to Soul Khan’s album Soul Like Khan. Aabaraki is his band, and this track is a smooth jawnt for sure. The video brings a little Weird Science to the party, and all in all, its a pretty dope package. This one you’ve gotta check out.

Statik Selektah x Lord Sear – Open Bar Classics Volume 2: The 90′s

May 26, 2011

Statik and Sear are back with the second instalment of their Open Bar series of mixes. Volume one was dope as fuck and still gets regular rotation on the Illwood Heights stereo, so I’m looking forward to giving this one a full listen. Only dropped 1h 37m ago according to my Twitter timeline, so nah, I haven’t checked it yet, but I’m pretty sure its gonna be that good stuff. This one is on a 90′s tip.

Mayer Hawthorne (@MayerHawthorne) – Impressions (The Covers EP) [FREE DL]

May 13, 2011

I think most rappers are jealous of people who can sing. If we could sing, it’d make writing those catchy hooks just that little bit easier. Of course, you could be one of those guys who doesn’t give a fuck and sings anyway, like ODB, or the Biz. One man who can sing, however, is Mayer Hawthorne. Don’t know if he can rap though, but thats beside the point.

Anyway, he’s just released this sweet EP of cover versions, and its well worth checking out. There’s a dope, spooked out version of Chromeo’s Don’t Turn The Lights On, and a great re-doing of the Isley Brothers Work To Do. And some more.

Statik Selektah x Lord Sear – Open Bar Classics Volume 1: The 80′s [FREE DL]

April 26, 2011

This has been out for a couple of days, but I wanted the chance to put it through its paces on the Illwood Heights stereo before I dropped it on you, but I needn’t have been so cautious. With the help of Lord Sear, Statik Selektah drops some classic 80′s R’n'B for your ears (Yeah I said it). Perfect for those summer afternoon barbeques or days on the beach with a boombox. Apparently these two are gonna be dropping a new mix every week over the summer, so I’ll hook you up with them as and when I get em.

Aloe Blacc (@AloeBlacc) – The Warriors [VIDEO]

September 15, 2010

Taken from the Recharged LP by Cook Classics, here’s a cool video for Aloe Blacc’s track The Warriors, following the creation of a pretty dope artwork based on the film of the same name. The track itself is an interesting concept, as I’m sure that most of the lyrics are straight up taken from the film script. I’m sure Tyni will be able to verify that for me. Aloe Blacc’s Good Things LP should be out on Stones Throw a little later this month.

Ben L’Oncle Soul – Seven Nation Army [LIVE]

September 14, 2010

Just mentioning it in my post below made me want to listen to this version of the White Stripes track. I didn’t know there was a video for it either, so that was a bonus. It would have been a bonus if Youtube had let me embed it, but for now, I’ll switch it for this video of him doing it live. You can still watch the video on the link below. The homegirl J-Double put me on to this dude. He’s definitely got some soul. This is my favourite version of this track.
